From informed care to treatment: why our work should always be trauma-informed

Those who are affected by traumatic experiences are often at risk of experiencing memories, flashbacks, and dissociation.

When they seek help from professionals whose practice is not informed by an understanding of how trauma affects people, there is a danger that their symptoms become worse, and they avoid seeking further help.

Who should be trauma-informed?

Health and social care workers, HR professionals, counsellors, and psychotherapists are increasingly aware of the importance of trauma-informed services, and would most benefit from the Understanding Trauma course.

However, trauma-informed practice begins before referral to support and treatment.

From a person’s first point of contact with you or your service, to the last point of contact, trauma-informed practice ensures that they receive the support they need, and that no unintentional harm is done.

This means that our Understanding Trauma course is also suitable for team members who answer calls, reply to emails, welcome people on reception, or even manage social media. We all need to ensure we support people to avoid retraumatising them when they are at their most vulnerable and reaching out for help.

Understanding Trauma will help you:

  • Understand how trauma can prevent a person from meeting their needs in healthy ways
  • Equip you with the knowledge and skills to support someone affected by trauma
  • Normalise the symptoms of trauma for those who are affected
  • Support someone affected by trauma to access the treatment they need

The course covers:

  1. What is trauma?
  2. Trauma and Emotional Needs
  3. The principles of trauma-informed care
  4. The biology of trauma
  5. Security and post-traumatic stress
  6. Control, shutdown and dissociation
  7. Supporting access to treatment

Outcomes for Understanding Trauma attendees:

Whether you are experienced at supporting people affected by trauma, or just starting your learning journey, Understanding Trauma will provide you with new and essential insights to practice in a safe and effective way.

Most importantly, you will gain the confidence to ensure that when people seek your support, they are not at risk of being retraumatised, especially if they disclose that they have been affected by trauma.
