Understanding Trauma
From informed care to treatment: why our work should always be trauma-informed
Those who are affected by traumatic experiences are often at risk of experiencing memories, flashbacks, and dissociation.
When they seek help from professionals whose practice is not informed by an understanding of how trauma affects people, there is a danger that their symptoms become worse, and they avoid seeking further help.
Who should be trauma-informed?
Health and social care workers, HR professionals, counsellors, and psychotherapists are increasingly aware of the importance of trauma-informed services, and would most benefit from the Understanding Trauma course.
However, trauma-informed practice begins before referral to support and treatment.
From a person’s first point of contact with you or your service, to the last point of contact, trauma-informed practice ensures that they receive the support they need, and that no unintentional harm is done.
This means that our Understanding Trauma course is also suitable for team members who answer calls, reply to emails, welcome people on reception, or even manage social media. We all need to ensure we support people to avoid retraumatising them when they are at their most vulnerable and reaching out for help.
Understanding Trauma will help you:
- Understand how trauma can prevent a person from meeting their needs in healthy ways
- Equip you with the knowledge and skills to support someone affected by trauma
- Normalise the symptoms of trauma for those who are affected
- Support someone affected by trauma to access the treatment they need
The course covers:
- What is trauma?
- Trauma and Emotional Needs
- The principles of trauma-informed care
- The biology of trauma
- Security and post-traumatic stress
- Control, shutdown and dissociation
- Supporting access to treatment
Outcomes for Understanding Trauma attendees:
Whether you are experienced at supporting people affected by trauma, or just starting your learning journey, Understanding Trauma will provide you with new and essential insights to practice in a safe and effective way.
Most importantly, you will gain the confidence to ensure that when people seek your support, they are not at risk of being retraumatised, especially if they disclose that they have been affected by trauma.
Thank you so much for this – a really insightful and practical take on modern mental health and wellbeing.
This was one of the best training courses I’ve ever done. Very informative, the trainer was amazing. I’ve recommended it to several people!
Some excellent training from The Mental Health Toolkit by Suffolk Mind that provided some valuable insights and practical tools for personal/professional development, and working with young people (highly recommend!).
There was some really useful information on the Mental Health Continuum (the spectrum of mental health that we are all on) and how to take care of yourself and those around you.
We also discussed the Emotional Needs & Resources approach, and I particularly enjoyed the information delivered around sleep and its relationship to mental health.
I’d recommend this session for any managers or teams as a whole looking to develop their understanding around mental health.
The Essentials course was great. It felt well-balanced between a large amount of information, but with enough time for it to not feel overwhelming. Penny was a great trainer and was very approachable, knowledgeable and very happy to answer any questions we had. The group size and content felt appropriate also.
I felt the topics covered were important and interesting. Timing (topics, breaks, discussions) was fab and slick use of tech with the breakout rooms. Penny is a great teacher, engaging, articulate and thorough.
Really good session, friendly and approachable. Relevant to professional and personal life.
Karys was a fantastic trainer – she was patient, inclusive and approachable. The content was really interesting, easy to understand, and would be relevant to anyone. I got so much more out of the training than I expected, and feel really aware of how to implement this into my everyday life.
All members of the Becketts team attend The Essentials course as part of their induction. It ensures that everyone begins to understand their own mental health and creates a common language amongst the team. I believe it is an important foundation of creating an open culture within the organisation.
I learnt a great deal, not least how the language and research around stress and mental health has evolved. It’s one of the best courses I’ve done on the subject
Really well presented, engaging and interactive – good mix of listening and doing. [The trainer was] very knowledgeable and welcoming [and] made a really safe space for us to have open conversations. Best course I’ve been on in a while.
Highly accessible and enjoyable training – in itself it was my first step to a revised approach to self care.
Karys and Fraser were really approachable, friendly, and supportive of us all, and they delivered the information in a non-judgemental and accessible way.
It was a vast amount of information delivered in an easy to understand way. Phil was very engaging and definitely knows what he is talking about! It was a brilliant course – thank you.
Some great feedback from the staff. Highly recommended training. Thank you!
The Essentials session delivered to our senior managers was greatly appreciated. The feedback that we received was very positive and not only did it give a general awareness of what it means to be emotionally healthy, it also gave practical advice on how we can satisfy our emotional needs. The course was well-delivered, engaging and very valuable to us as we look to develop our focus on wellbeing in the workplace.
